The mission of the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy (ICAP) is to produce innovative, interdisciplinary research and real-world solutions for island decision-makers in the public and private sectors.

A recognized focal point for University of Hawaiʻi (UH) and other climate expertise, ICAP serves as a two-way conduit between the university and island communities to catalyze climate change adaptation and resiliency. As a result of the Center’s work, current and predicted climate changes in Hawaiʻi, the Pacific, and global island communities are competently addressed to protect the quality of life, natural resources, economies, and cultural and historical assets of the islands.

In its first two years, ICAP has provided timely, relevant information through groundbreaking publications combined with targeted outreach. Our collaborative work with university partners and Hawaiʻi’s elected officials, state and county agencies, and federal entities has facilitated adaptation planning at multiple scales and leveraged resources to provide quality decision support. Additionally, ICAP engaged young leaders in its island-based work, helping communities to adapt. ICAP’s first two years reflect its commitment to filling gaps, providing much-needed solutions, and working locally first.
