The United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Sixteenth Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 16) met in Montreal, Canada from April 30 – May 5, 2012.  Each year the Secretariat of the CBD organizes a poster session and this year Malia Nobrega, ICAP Director of Strategic Partnerships, responded to the call for posters with the theme of “Oceans, Coasts, Islands: Achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets”.  This theme was selected to complement the discussions during SBSTTA 16 on the in-depth review of the programme of work on island biodiversity and the agenda items on marine and coastal biodiversity.

The title of the ICAP poster and abstract is “EIA HAWAI`I HE MOKU HE KANAKA: ADAPTIVE MANGEMENT FOR OUR ISLANDS”.  Malia drew on information from key ICAP publications like the 2010 Hawai`i’s Changing Climate Briefing Sheet, the 2011 Sea-Level Rise Policy Tool Kit, and the 2012 Water Resources and Climate Change Adaptation in Hawai‘i white paper.  She included a personal example that her ‘ohana (family) experiences as an impact of climate change and the effects it has on the cultural practice of salt production on the island of Kaua’i.

Malia was not able to attend the poster session but her friends from the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) were able to and sent ICAP a picture of the poster on display.
